Jacó (Puntarenas Province)

Jacó — Costa Rica's Most Accessible and Most Polarizing Beach Town

Jacó sits on the central Pacific coast just 1.5 to 2 hours from San José and the international airport — the shortest drive from the capital to any established Pacific beach town in Costa Rica. No domestic flight, no long mountain road, no four-hour commitment. For expats who want beach life without sacrificing easy access to San José's hospitals, shopping, and airport, that proximity alone makes Jacó worth serious consideration.

The town itself is the most urban beach experience in Costa Rica. Paved roads, high-rise condos, multiple supermarkets, banks, gyms, reliable fiber internet, and a dining scene that ranges from local sodas to quality international restaurants. If you've been told you have to choose between beach living and modern conveniences, Jacó is the argument that you don't.

But Jacó comes with a reputation that is worth addressing directly before you visit. The nightlife is loud and the main strip gets genuinely rough after dark. There is a visible sex tourism presence and a party culture that is part of the town's identity — not a fringe element. The beach itself, while wide and long, is not the clearest water on the Pacific coast. Playa Hermosa just 10 minutes south is significantly better for an actual beach day.

Jacó works exceptionally well for the right kind of expat — someone who wants urban convenience, an active social life, consistent surf, and easy access back to San José. It is a poor fit for families with young children, retirees seeking peace and quiet, or anyone uncomfortable with a town that fully embraces its party reputation. Know what you're looking for before you visit and Jacó will make its own case clearly.
